What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy, is tool in which a certified hypnotist guides you through visualization exercises to create a powerfully focused awareness and deep relaxation. This is state of mind similar to meditation and is sometimes called “trance-like”.

Hypnotic trance is actually a common every-day occurrence for many people, such as zoning out when driving a familiar stretch of road, being swept up in the creative processes, during meditation and prayer, or getting lost in a good book. This trance-state occurs when our focus shifts from the external world around us to the internal world within. Hypnosis could be seen as the process of learning to access that internal focus, consciously and deliberately, for therapeutic purposes.

Common Misconceptions

While television would have us believe that a person under hypnosis has no conscious awareness or control of their actions, the reality is hypnotism creates an enhanced focus. In other words, you are fully aware of what is happening the entire time, and you will not do anything under hypnosis that you do not want to do.

Because you’re in this heightened state of focus, you may be more open to suggestions or ideas, allowing seeds of change to be planted deep in your subconscious mind. Your hypnotist will work with you to set goals and intentions for your one-on-one sessions prior to starting the process of hypnotism, leaving you more effective in reaching those goals.
